Day 1: In Honor of Me? No, Of Everyone!
This Friday marks my last day with the American Red Cross. I’ve worked at national headquarters for more than eight years–never in my life did I imagine working anywhere for that long, let alone an amazing place like the Red Cross! I’m joining another great organization in a few weeks (more to come on that soon), and while this transition will be marked with several happy hours, lunches and dinners, I wanted to do something that highlights the altruistic nature of the organization I’m leaving, and reminds me of why I love working for a nonprofit in the first place. So I’m thought up doing at least one charitable activity, and supporting at least one nonprofit in my last week here, ”In Honor Of” my time at the Red Cross. So while its sort of in honor of me, I’m making it in honor of everyone who benefits from the amazing work charities do around the world every day.
Monday got started with a couple quickies–I heard about a great organization called Hope Phones on Twitter, that recycles old cell phones and uses the proceeds to get phones for clinics around the world. It took me about a minute to print a postage paid label and pop an old cell phone I found while cleaning out my desk in the mail. Voila–one act down!
In another super easy act of charity, the United Nations Environment Programme for ever Twitter user that follows them at @UNEPandYou between now and June 6th. No brainer!
